Just found this. It doesn’t sound too good, but perhaps it only applies to O2 Mobile Broadband. I would check their terms and conditions but the site appears to be down at the moment.

I’d check the Ts & Cs for my O2 ADSL, but… Well, I’m too lazy to see what little caveats they have in there.
On a more pleasing note, by rewiring the Hayek household last week, we achieved an extra 2.5Mbps, taking us up to 18.5Mbps on our connection – a whole 512Kbps higher than anticipated by O2!

O2 might be selling your identity!
18.5 is pretty impressive. Do you live on top of the exchange? Did you just replace old wire with new or do any exciting bandwidth creating trickery?

The house had a bizarre and confusing mixture of wiring from the 70s, 80s and 90s (the house has the old star system, rather than NTE5 introduced in the 80s), which was a bit confusing anyway, so I decided to tidy it up and bring it up to date – rewired the only extension socket so that only terminals 2 and 5 were connected with blue and blue/white wires. I also removed surplus extensions (seeing as the only phones in the house now are DECT) and ensured that the bell wires (orange and orange/ white) were disconnected.
Naturally, I didn’t play with BT’s end of the line, ‘cos that would be naughty!
I suspect what made the difference was removing the surplus sockets, as they could have been introducing noise on to the line (nothing was attached to any of them, except for legacy ADSL filters).
Didn’t touch the O2 box (not a big fan of it, anyway! I want to use my own Netgear router and install Tomato firmware on it when I have a moment) to do anything with it, although I suspect it could perhaps gain a little more performance with some tweaking.
I wouldn’t say I live all that close to the exchange, either. I reckon lots of people could improve their performance by just doing some maintenance on their lines at their side of the BT connection – if they can be arsed, of course.
