Pot, Kettle,…

Apparently Blackpool Council have ordered the car park on Caunce Street/Church Street to smarten itself up within 1 month or be closed down. I know they are on a mission to crush private business owners in Blackpool but as far as I know this car park is newly surfaced, has pay and display machines that actually work and is otherwise unremarkable.

I suspect the Council have moved in because it’s always full, it’s three times cheaper than all other car parks in the town and it has a fair pricing bracket: you pay £3.00 for 9 hours, not 8. By closing it, they would be forcing people to use Council operated car parks and pay £12.00 per day instead.

Dresden, 1945. Oh wait. Blackpool 2009.

Dresden, 1945. Oh wait. Lonsdale Road Coach Park, Blackpool, 2009.

If the Council want to take this view that all unpleasant parking areas should be shut down, how about this coach park at Lonsdale Road. Council owned, completely neglected. Check out the bus shelter: within a few weeks of it being constructed, all of the glasswork was smashed and never replaced: it is now nothing more than a brown greenhouse with no glass.

It’s not the best photo (blame Nokia for that) but you can also see the dirty brick paving that has had no attention for years and the welcoming homely sight of the tram depot towering overhead.

So, is it not a requirement for Council owned property to be kept in good order? They really should focus their energy not on complaining about their competitors as Mr Callow tried (and failed) to do with regards the Tithebarn project in Preston, but on keeping their own house in order.

  1. I noticed that little snippet in the print edition (yes, a novelty for the Hayek household) and had to wonder what the issue was, relative to everything else. I mean, sure, it looks a little bit ropey around the edges, but that’s about it. As a car park, it functions.

One has to wonder if this is the council overstepping its territory when it comes to parking (and, oh, the cost of parking!).

Talbot Road Car Park stinks of piss and is grimey. Is it getting a one month warning?

  2. [...] up) so perhaps that’s the new “central” car park – although the Council don’t seem to like private car parks. Or, maybe it’ll be the old Mecca land surrounded by ReBlackpool hoardings. [...]
