Rubbish

Ever seen one of these?

Ever seen one of these?

I’m just back from a weekend in Manchester and as I was walking through Piccadilly Gardens on Saturday something struck me. I saw a guy there picking up rubbish and putting it into a rubbish bin on wheels.

Then I saw not one but two road/pavement sweeping vehicles. Slightly further down the street there was another guy pushing a mobile street sweeping machine as well.

Obviously in Manchester they like to keep the place clean. Why don’t we have any of these in Blackpool?

  1. Ahem. I have actually seen some of these. They bought a new fleet of them a couple of years ago. They seldom get out much, though.

And the only place I’ve seen those pushable ones is at Pleasure Beach

We could buy 1000 of them – it’d make no difference, as there wouldn’t be the collective will or common sense to use them.

I presume you’ve already seen my post on how the council handles peak time street rubbish?

    • I hadn’t, no, but I have now! It’s like that everywhere in town really, yet in Manchester they appeared to have an army of people keeping it clean all day even though it was pissing it down.

Yes it’s a city, yes it has more money, but still, a little effort on this in Blackpool would be appreciated by everyone.

  3. What they don’t understand is that if you get the place clean, it is easier to keep it clean!

  4. Even Fylde has these. We don’t have much rubbish on our street with 99% of that being produced by the Fylde Streetscene green bin dry cardboard & garden waste/green box (for glass, plastic, metals and textiles – whatever the last one is as they’ve rejected wool from me) and a blue bag for all your papers being emptied. Then how often you see them depends on who knows what – they come every week when you have a clean street and then you don’t see them for months.
In fact Manchester is the only place I’ve seen these being used properly. I worked in the city centre for many years – and when they had an event on (such as a market) they actually have extra cleaning staff on – collecting the waste regularly and when the whole thing packs up they come again to help the traders get rid of all the waste rather than giving them too small household wheely bins and not being seen until the next working day when it’s all blown about everywhere.

    • Spot on. I think it’s ridiculous that the Council seems to use refuse collection as some sort of control mechanism, particularly of business.

“The amount of tax we pay them…”, yes, I know it’s a cliche but its completely accurate. They should be breaking their balls to keep the place clean and tidy, but obviously they are too backward thinking to realise that such actions might actually generate them even more money to waste.
