Oh no! More roadworks!
They are building a Toucan crossing (basically a pedestrian crossing with a cycle lane) on East Park Drive near Lawson Road, and for the next couple of weeks you can expect it to be gridlock hell. I think the signs said it’d be finished by 11th September.
Traffic Management 101 - Must converge two lanes into one at every opportunity
I don’t go down there much and as a result was unaware of it until yesterday. I ended up sat in standing traffic at Victoria Hospital for the best part of 30 minutes as people in big German cars kept overtaking and muppets kept letting them in.
Why are there so many junctions like that anyway? You know, that start with two lanes and immediately converge into one. It has to encourage dangerous driving. It’s the same where Common Edge Road crosses Squires Gate Lane.
Anyway on a similar note, a few minutes ago I received an email back from the Assistant Director for Built Environment, John Donnellon, in relation to my recent query about South Park Drive. No revelations, unfortunately, but he confirms what Cllr Jim Houldsworth said in that a “tough decision” was made to divert cash to works on the promenade rather than to the South Park Drive scheme.
He also said that the South Park Drive scheme will hopefully be revisited in future if funds are available. Doesn’t sound particularly hopeful, but if Mr Donnellon doesn’t know anything about the scheme, who does?

Ooh that really makes my blood boil when idiots let people in who have driven as fast as they can in the right hand lane they knew was closing. If it wasn’t for them the queue would always be a tiny fraction of the length they end up.

John won’t know about the scheme; he probably asked Pete Cross what was going on. Pete has a long and distinguished tradition of not discussing anything with anyone. The Pleasure Beach Road Trains, Waterloo Road etc. All Pete Cross hush-hush jobs.
Wit till you see what he has planned for the area around Blackpool Victoria Hospital. I think they’re on their third ‘consultation’ and even though it’s clear the residents and Councillors don’t want it Pete thinks it’s best to go ahead “…because of the all the work which has gone in already…”
Last I heard he had Maxine Callow onside in pushing even even though Sue Ridyard, the Councillor for the area concerned, didn’t want it either.
Frankly it’s a fucking mess but indicative of the problem. When you don’t know what you’re doing yourself and you surround yourself by people who know less than you do then you have decisions like this being made.
Pete Cross used to run the drainage section. He knows fuck-all about traffic management. The only reason he’s where is just now is because John Shaw died in service and the department had been passed around like a dirty book in jail. It didn’t make enough money so it was cut loose by Julian Kearsley and ended up being a part of Tourism. That’s a bit like putting the country’s nuclear industry under direct control of the RHS. You still have guys in suits attending meetings but they know absolutely fuck-all about the job at hand.

Thats why Callows are still here as a pain in the ass,,
Only a few in the council will go against The Callows, it is such a shame that more councilors cannot or will not air thier problems about the Callows ,, this council will not and can not move on because of them ..
It is about time that they got voted off the council and let some one that cares what Blackpool take thier place , as with them in thier prominant place on the council nothing will be done ,, both use and abuse people, until they either give up or are voted from the council by the Callows sheep,,
Get them out and let Blackpool come onto the moden world and start leading the way to more visiters and better policeing …
