In the news over the last couple of weeks has been the story that nobody will be allowed to regularly transport someone else’s child without undergoing Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks and obtaining a certificate that confirms that sufficient background checks have been done to suggest that they are not a paedophile.

Professionals that deal with children have to undergo CRB checks already at a cost of £64, but now it’s being extended to almost every profession that might have the most infrequent contact with someone under 18. Furthermore, if you work with multiple organisations, you have to have a CRB check for each one at the aforementioned cost. It’s a totally stupid scheme that serves no purpose whatsoever aside from creating a quango to look after it, creating a cashflow to the Government and restricting opportunities for children.

"Dear Britain, you are now all child sex offenders unless you pay me to say otherwise"

"Dear Britain, you are now all child sex offenders unless you pay me to say otherwise"

For people that are not being paid for their time looking after or transporting children the check is free but even so, if you’re a parent and you ferry children between football, tennis, swimming and Scouts, then you have to have four separate CRB checks. These checks are only valid for the context for which they are applied for.

Why is it that we now have to obtain a certificate to say we are non paedophile members of society?

Are we now all labelled as paedophiles unless we choose to get our Gordon Brown says I am not a Paedophile certificates?

Is this the next step in social control and loss of freedom? What will it be next: guilty until proven innocent?

How is it ever going to be possible to enforce this, given that it only applies to informal agreements between two responsible parties?

The future of Britain

The future of Britain

The kind of agreement they are picking on is between two sets of parents where one parent regularly takes the children of both sets of parents to sporting events or any other social activity. It could be to and from sporting practice or to and from a youth club.

The punishment for not having the paedophile certificate is a £5000 fine and a criminal record. Not a custodial punishment, though, so if you are a potential paedophile that has just kidnapped your friend’s child you’re free to go and sexually assault them once you’ve taken your rap for not having the paperwork.

The outcome of this crazy scheme will be to the detriment of the children and will offer no protection. Families will become more insular, people will be more suspicious of each other. Children will just end up sat at home playing computer games and eating family packs of Doritos because the normal designated driver for youth team sports events decided he didn’t want to do it any more after he got called a paedophile because he didn’t get his paedophile certificate.

Chris Morris will be laughing out loud at this policy. After all, it appeals to the same hysteria that his show did back in 2001 – except his show was a joke and this is, sadly, real.

  2. Whilst I agree with all of the above, it is potentially even worse than that. The Indepenent Safeguarding Authority is a Govt Quango (we really need another one of them don’t we!!). The ISA produce two lists, the Childs list and the adults list. If you appear on one of the lists then you are barred from working with that group.

So, picture this scenario, Fred Smith has been helping out at Bloggspool Junior Football Club for 20 years, taking the kids in his car to and from games, coaching sessions etc….

Suddenly, the ISA write to Fred and tell him to report for a meeting to answer some charges. If he fails to appear at the meeting, or fails to give a good defence of the “charges” then he is now on the childs list and is forbidden to transport the kids any more.

So he could be having to explain to parents that he is no longer able to transport their kids any more and that he can’t even explain why!

Given such a scenario, as a parent, what would you think??

There MUST be a good reason why the ISA have put him on the list mustn’t there????

No smoke without fire etc…… etc……

No, I’m afraid this this whole sorry affair is yet another knee jerk reaction from a spent Government intent on controlling our every move.

    • Entirely agree.

This scheme is going to see innocent parents and other child co-ordinators labelled as guilty because they didn’t get their paedophile certificate which is just morally wrong.

I just don’t understand how having a criminal record check relates to any of this. You can get a criminal record for anything these days and if it related to being a paedophile you’d already be on the sex offenders’ register…

  6. Well the answer’s simple – just don’t help other people’s kids. Sounds like a lot less hassle all round really.
