Pool 2, Newcastle 1

I’m not a Blackpool FC supporter but I went to the Blackpool v Newcastle game last night and what a cracking atmosphere it was!

Even with half a stadium, the Blackpool fans had the place rocking and Newcastle clearly capitulated as Ian Holloway’s tangerine army passed them off the pitch. Great game, Holloways clearly got them playing good football and they seem to have physical presence as well even against Premier League hard boys like Joey Barton and Nicky Butt.

I’d definitely recommend a visit to Bloomfield Road.

  1. I am not a football fan in fact I hate the wretched ‘greedy game’ (NOT beautiful game) but I at least see this as good news, best of luck BFC, make sure you crush those PNE maggots at your next clash.

    • It’s a greedy business just like any other, but it’ll implode someday, especially if this recession gets any worse or if Sky rivals fall into financial difficulty like Setanta did.

If Sky is the only serious bidder for the matches, it ain’t going to want to pay top dollar as it has nobody competing!

I agree that it’s becoming a billionaires toyland now. They buy their team and face it off against other billionaires’ teams, and probably joke about it over a few bottles of Cristal.

Bizarrely if you take Owen Oyston and Belokon’s wealth, that makes Blackpool one of the richer clubs in the league, it’s just Oyston’s reluctance to spend anything that has historically slowed progress due to a very shallow squad later in the season.

      • Oh and also the bizarre arrangement between the two parties. Belokon owns the team, Oyston owns the stadium.

I presume this means when a new player comes in, it is not Oyston that is bankrolling it, but that it’s Oyston’s responsibility to develop the ground.

  2. It’s great to see Blackpool doing well, a successful football team will help raise Blackpool’s profile and help with further investment into the town.

    • It’s just a shame their stadium is mocked by just about every other group of supporters for only having two stands and I think that does cast a reflection on the town. Some places don’t do things by halves, but Blackpool does, you know?

I know the new south stand is taking shape but honestly, if they’d build the east stand as well I think the ground would be rocking, especially if they keep playing as they did on Wednesday night. And it would look like a PROPER football ground, not just a cash cow for Karl Oyston and a publicity device for his dad.

      • Totally agree Phil, it’s madness that it’s taken so long to build the South stand and even more madness that when they do get round to completing the ground it will only have a capacity of 16,000 which for a championship club will be too small.

I can see talks starting with the houses at the back aimed at buying them in order to build a bigger stand which will give them that 20K capacity and in so doing taking another ten years to complete.

        • It’s a low capacity but for Championship it suffices considering Blackpool don’t usually sell out their matches even now. Oyston’s argument would be just that. Why build more stands if we can’t put bums on seats.

It really depends on what ambition the club has. Were it in the Premier League it would sell out every week.

I mean, the only reason I went was because the visitors were Newcastle – imagine if it were the likes of Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.

With a decent stadium, the town would be booming almost every weekend with a surge of several thousand additional visitors.

Nearby we have loads of massive football clubs, like Liverpool, Everton, Blackburn, Man United/City, Bolton, Wigan, so surely they would bring a full away allocation, but I expect most visiting Premier League teams would.

I don’t know how long it would take to increase the capacity, but they’ve knocked up that South Stand in a matter of months so I don’t know why they can’t repeat that on the east side.

  3. Perhaps the team could run the council? They would do a better job.

    Bye Bye Callow farts……………
