In the wake of the UAF protest at the BNP meeting in Cleveleys a month or so ago, the leader of Wyre Borough Council has called for all political parties to be banned from using public facilities.
Loaded Tory toff Russell Forsyth has reasoned that because that a massive 60 Unite Against Facism protesters – most of whom were students that aren’t even from the local area – turned up to shout abuse at BNP members, a ban should now be enforced on all political use of public buildings.
Currently, according to Mr Forsyth, facilities can be used by anyone. So why change it? The BNP didn’t do anything wrong, it was the UAF protesters causing trouble like it always is.
I fail to see the logic here. After all, if they ban the BNP from using public facilities then they’ll use private ones and the UAF will turn up just the same.
Forsyth himself has recognised that banning political parties from using public facilities would mean the likes of David Cameron would not be able to do his Cameron Direct meetings such as that he did at Marine Hall in Fleetwood this year. Arguably cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face. But he should also recognise that knee-jerk reactions like this towards the BNP generate sympathy for the BNP and contempt for the hypocrites that commit them.
After all, the BNP are not the only ones to use public facilities. Earring-sporting Labour rentagob Simon Blackburn is known to use public facilities in Layton to convene party meetings. Why no uproar about this?
Because it’s not about the politics at all, it’s about the UAF causing trouble and this should be dealt with by the Police just like any rabble of thugs would be.

I agree with you that ALL political parties shouldn’t be banned but the facts do seemed to have blurred here somewhat.
Firstly the UAF contigent were on the whole, from the local area. I know this because I was amongst them and recognised most of them. It is also untrue to say that most of them where students. There were a few student types (ie young people) but the vast majority were aged 24 plus. Its also unfair to suggest that the UAF were causing trouble. They were there to demonstrate against what is still a rascist and homophobic organisation. The police officers and journalists present have testified to the good behaviour of the demonstrators in contrast to some attendees of the BNP meeting who were warned about their conduct.
I personally don’t have a problem with an election candidate using a public hall for a meeting, as long as it is open to the public. Wyre Borough Council just need to tighten up their procedures regarding the public use of their public buildings. I personally detest the BNP but I will fight for the right of their candidates and elected representitives to be heard.
I do disagree with political parties using public buildings to fund raise for election purposes like Cllr. Blackburn has done in Layton and other Labour Councillors in Blackpool have done.

But surely the only reason this issue is even being discussed is because the UAF and resultant police presence were in attendance as well as the BNP. I accept that some BNP members would have been goading the UAF, and I can’t believe that the UAF were not abusing the BNP in return.
I saw the footage on Sky on the day Griffin was elected and the groups of UAF thugs in Manchester that day were student types and were certainly not peaceful. Just like saying a proportion of BNP members are not racist, I am sure there are some in the UAF that are non-violent, but the footage on TV whenever the BNP stage anything suggests otherwise.
Russell Forsyth says in the paper that the reason it’s being discussed is because a whopping 60 people protested, but people will protest at the BNP regardless of whether they gather at a public or private venue. Surely then, it’s better to take the money from the BNP to let them use it than to have them pay a private landlord for use of facilities.
As we both know, the BNP are not the only party using public buildings for political purposes, and I’d like to know whether Mr Blackburn would permit anyone of any allegiance to attend his Labour fundraising soirees.

Some of the thugs in Manchester purporting to be from the UAF were out of order, went over the top and should have been prosecuted. Forsythe, was wrong – not everyone demonstrating against the BNP were demonstrating because of WHERE they where – it was because of WHO they were!

Exactly, and the protests will follow the BNP whether or not they use public buildings. It’s self defeating to ban all political parties from using public buildings. I’m sure they pay for usage, so all of this revenue would then disappear if Wyre Borough Council get their way.
It’s a total waste of Council time and total waste of column inches. They should focus on things that actually matter rather than toeing the mainstream party line on the BNP issue, ensuring this mainstream BNP persecution remains in the press as much as possible. I’m sure Mr Griffin will appreciate the increase in support.
Even Peter Callow has opted for a reasonable stance. He doesn’t like the BNP, but he wont obstruct democracy.

You are right it is not about politics, it is about public relations, and Cllr Forsyth has not been in the paper recently.
They could not ban political meetings in Wyre public buildings, especially as a general election is due in April/May.
He is hoping Labour Cllrs say the BNP only should be banned, result great publicity but no ban … maybe a large fee (to pay for extra security) for some.

I forgot to say, the UAF are Unwashed and Filthy, red rabble shit sucking weirdo-scum who hate freedom of speech and are marxist paedophiles.
If the UAF are so concerned about fascism they need to look no further than their labour sponsors, who are the real fascists here.Labour has done more to give the BNP votes than any other party, and all those votes have been gift wrapped, through Political correctness, immigration,EU laws etc.
Now we have ETHNO nationalism on the political scence, whose fault is that?
ZANULIEBOUR thats who.

If political meetings (even private ones not open to the public) are banned from the public buildings then there’s a big loss of revenue to the private sector venues. Will these venues become uneconomically viable and close?
They can’t ban the BNP although they’d like to, so they are trying to cut their own noses off to spite their faces. If their parties dealth with the mass immigration and PC correctness madness that has led to unfair treatment of people not fitting into “classifications” then only a handful would vote for the BNP and the party would be effectively dead and insignificant again.

Quite right, but why is it that the mainstream parties want to carry on being the BNP’s best publicists?
They wont deal with them and nanny us with standard rhetoric that panders to minorities and guilt trips the rest of us into feeling sorry for them.
Yes Nick Griffin started out as a fanatic, if you like. But I think he’s become far more moderate these days and every “racist” quote attributed to him was said tens of years ago. Maybe legislation has forced him to tone it down, but also I think even he has realised that John Tyndall’s National Front politics are from a different zeitgeist and are unwelcome today.
He sports a mantra that people warm to. Get out of Europe. Reign control back to Westminster. Focus on restoring English pride. Smashing the politically correct stranglehold. Unfortunately tainted by his stance on non-islanders which is all anyone talks about. Sure his policies might have no substance but he says what people want to hear which is what politicians should do. And they should act upon it.
Everyone goes BNP this, BNP that. Lets go the other way on this. Take a look at Anjem Choudary. You’ve doubtless heard of him as he gets a lot of airtime (far more than Nick Griffin does). If you think Nick Griffin is extreme, this man supercedes him over and over.
Long time follower of Omar Bakri Mohammed, Choudary is British and was brought up through our education system, ending up qualifying as a solicitor (he is now on benefits). He has led two extreme Islamic organisations which have been banned.
Aside from encouraging Muslims to reject Christmas, he encourages radicalisation of young Muslims and has recruited for terrorist training camps. He spreads hate propaganda and encourages Muslims to commit murder.
He has stated that he would support killing of non-Muslims. He believes Britain should be a Sharia state, believes Muslims should not co-operate with Police and has said he would not inform Police if he heard of a terror plot.
He has called for the assassination of the Pope and threatened British Jews with holy war. He also supported the Mumbai terror attacks.
Yet he gets more airtime than Nick Griffin and is not subjected to a witchhunt nor followed round by “Unite Against Islam” because Gordon Brown says you’re not allowed to be against Islamic fundamentalism.
This is a prime example of the pandering towards minorities. Even Muslim states have banned him and kicked him out, yet in Britain we accept this benefit-sponging, hate-spewing moron and allow him to continue supporting murder of non-Muslims and recruiting for Islamic extremist groups.
