After the invasion of gypsies at a camp site off Hardhorn Road – land which apparently the gypsies own themselves – local residents have been in uproar about their negative impact on what is a relatively pleasant and affluent area.
Indeed, the police are called regularly to assist with antisocial problems and criminality caused by these so-called travellers with residents complaining of noise, road safety and a drop in their house value as a result of this gypsy encampment.
Gypsies have a reputation for intimidation, violence and being untouchable by the authorities and I fully understand the position of the residents near this gypsy site.
To be honest, I think we should lock them all up.

I really can’t see our politicians going for locking them up. Having said that it really annoys people here that as taxpayers we have to fund them living here – our council is rumoured to have put a lot in the Queen’s Manor development (the old Queen Mary’s School on the front near Fairhaven lake) – as apparently it’s a community thing that not only do they have to be housed, but they have to be housed together whatever the cost. Then they get priority healthcare and education – plus free laptops to help them continue their education whilst they’re moving aroudn. It’s policies like this that mean BNP votes – by people who aren’t the traditional racist role model.

I just hope Ian and Ruth get some personal experience of living next to travellers. I read on the gasjet that they are tracing the IP address of the phantom deleter to ban them.
In all honestly I have deleted comments in my time but nothing like the volume of the phantom deleter.

I had an email from the LEP branch of Johnston Press saying they were trying to trace an IP address. A friend of mine is quite knowledgable with computers and he said it is not that hard to trace an IP so I don’t see why no action has been taken. But this has been going on for about a year now. Round about last October/November suspiciously when abusive Labour-loving commenter ‘dustin’ mysteriously vanished never to be heard from again. Ever since he has gone I have been targeted by a deleter or several (who knows?) but now the idiot is just deleting all the comments.

Good point, I don’t see why they can’t have a system like BBC Have Your Say or the old Blackpool Citizen website where by they have a ‘Report unsuitable’ button and it asked for your email and why the comment is unsuitable but then it didn’t just remove the comment. The comment would be deleted at the discretion of a moderator. With that system only the truly offensive comments would be removed.

I think trace is the wrong word.
The Gasjet know your IP address as soon as you visit the site: they will record it with every comment and every “report unsuitable”.
It’s pointless to ban an IP address. Even if static, there are loads of anonymous proxies around that you can use, such as Anonymizer.
They have three options as I see it. One is get an active moderator. Two is force people to have an account and log in if they want to report a comment. Three just remove that “report unsuitable” thing altogether because if people really are offended by a comment they’ll phone them up anyway.
As you know, most if not all the time people report stuff it’s because they lost the argument not because they’re offended or because there’s anything particularly bad there.

Actually, four is allow the report unsuitable thing, but instead of having it remove the comment just have it email a moderator who can look at it and either delete it or approve it, preventing further “report unsuitable”.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out:
a) Who is looking at your site,
b) who is posting on your site,
c) where they are looking/posting from.
Phil is clued up enough toknow the answers to all three of the above and it was thus pretty easy to identify Ian and Ruth. To be honest, even without access to the stats page it wasn’t really difficult to guess! If it were really true that Ian’s daughter was posting on his behalf, why use the names Ian and Ruth???
I have a couple of different psuedonyms that I use but I do so in the sure knowledge that the site owners could quite easily expose my ID if they so wished. I also do it in the sure knowledge that I could just as easily hide my identity by using a proxy ip address.
The trouble with a lot of politicians, especially Labour ones is that they cannot help themselves. They have to share their feelings of smug superiority.
