Labour MP Joan Humble has today been awarded a soapbox by the Gasjet and she has used it to publicise the latest Government award of money to the town. The money is supposedly to “tackle antisocial behaviour”. It’s only 40 grand, so it doesn’t even match the amount Joan claims in expenses every year, but money is money.
Councillor Tony Williams – who normally I respect a bit more than the others due to his practical ideas – has reeled off some rhetoric that contains a lot of words but doesn’t seem to say anything; suggesting the money will be wasted in usual council fashion. He said, “it will give a very practical boost to the work already taking place in Blackpool to reduce anti-social behaviour and support those who suffer as a result of it.”
Like what, Tony?
The Gasjet followed up by saying that the money, “will pay for training and support of front-line staff working in the community and publicity to ensure residents know where and how to report incidents.”
I already know how to report an incident and I already know that nothing will happen to the perpetrator. This doesn’t quantify a reduction in antisocial behaviour at all, just a boost in training for some community workers, topped off by some Government propaganda spewed out by Joan “Out in 2010″ Bumble.
It’s another example of Labour’s inside-the-box thinking that more money quantifies improvement.
Compounding the ratepayers’ misery is the re-announcement that former top copper Russ Weaver has been awarded a monstrous salary and pension pot for a non-job. I mean, do we really need a “crime and justice co-ordinator”? Isn’t that what the Police and HM Court Service already do?

There’s comments ago “no-go” areas again as well. No non-privately owned street or park is a “no-go” area. As soon as people are reduced to such wimpish behaviour as to avoid them the criminal yobs win.

It will be probably spent on a recruitment drive for more PCSOs. In some areas down South neighbourhoods are actually paying a couple of pounds a week to have private security companies patrol their area and it has proven to be much more effective than PSCOs who do nothing but stand around chatting and doing nothing. They are a substantial waste of taxpayers money.

An army of Norris Cole’s off Coronation Street would do a better job than PCSOs, at least Norris (a typical busybody/nosey parker type for anyone unfamiliar) would actually bother to deal with anti-social behaviour and be a visible presence. Plus he wouldn’t cost the billions of pounds PCSOs cost.
