Growing pains

Yesterday there were the most daily hits ever on the site, with the preceding day having the second most: the Darrell Pierre story being by far the most accessed.

Over the month, actual visits are up by 42% with just shy of 1000 unique visitors. In the previous month, there were just less than 400 uniques.

The rate at which visitor numbers are growing explains why sometimes you’ll need to refresh the page for it to come up properly, and if you submit any comments you might face the “server timed out” page of death. Just hit refresh and eventually it’ll work.

If anyone knows a good (cheap) web host that’ll do me either a dedicated server or virtual (VPS) one with loads of RAM (1GB+) then let me know. I’m not bothered about monthly data allowance or disk space because I only use a few gigabytes of both. I’m currently with Tagadab whose VPS package is quite reasonable and support is good but due to RAM issues I’ve now got the database hosted on  UK2 which improved response of the site.

One of the pioneers of web hosting in the UK, UK2 have quite possibly the worst control panel in history and technical support that redefines the word “jobsworth”.

In fact, it has been 13 days and I’m still waiting for a support response on a trivial domain issue which I could have sorted out in 2 minutes. I’m not even linking them, they’re that shit.

Beware their misleading packages as well: it seems like on their “business” 3-domain package for around 7 quid a month you can only actually use one of the domains for hosting and the rest just take you to a UK2 holding page. That’s my experience thus far anyway, pending this support ticket I’ve got submitted with them.

Anyway enough exposure for that shower: thanks for the continued support!

  1. I have a couple of domains with uk2 too, they are crap. A-q.co.uk are much better but cost a little more, however, the support is miles better.

    • I’m surprised they have any customers at those prices!

        • To a degree, but you can’t be paying £100 a month for 250mb space and 5GB transfer, surely? That takes daylight robbery to another level.

You can rent your own dedicated server for £59 a month from other companies such as the one I mentioned above.

With that you get full control over it, including 80GB space, unlimited data, unlimited email, etc and no bizarre £75 charges for typing “yum install mysql”.

          • nowt wrong with UK2 for me always sorted shit fast and ex, there biz pack comes with 3 domains 2 of which are “holdings pages” but u can just set them up to use a DIR on ya main hosting really easy.. so u can host as many as u want in onelot of space. 1000GB data and 100GB space seems alright to me at the cost, runs fast, few problems…

  2. I’m certainly not techologically savvy – but for my blog I use the google blogger because it’s free and for my business I use heart internet who I’ve been exceedingly pleased with both in cost and ease of use.

    • I used blogger for a bit too but WordPress is so much better. I guess I could use WordPress’ own hosting but I want to use my own!

I’ll have a look at Heart, ta.
