I have been astounded by the hysterics some people got into when the analogue TV channels were switched off in our area recently. You would think people’s lives depended on their repeat prescriptions of soap-du-jour.

I don’t watch loads of TV but I was getting a bit pissed off about being reminded of the “digital switchover” constantly. After all, the solution is to simply go into the menu of your TV and hit the Auto Tune button. Not exactly brain surgery.

Last night I had the misfortune of spending 2 hours setting up and explaining the workings of a hard disk recorder to both my grandmother who’s deaf (but refuses to use her hearing aids) and has macular degeneration (that the NHS wont fund the drugs for), and her deaf husband that looks half dead and can’t move out of his chair. They already had a hard disk recorder but it didn’t have a digital tuner in it, so it became obsolete.

All these recorders are the same, you press your guide button, choose what you want to record, press the timer button, confirm it, and you’re all set. Similar to Sky Plus but the user interface is never quite as slick and easy. But try explaining that to these two who both sit there asking stupid questions like, “is it HD Ready?”and not even listening to the answer.

HD. H fucking D. I’m fed up of hearing people using this annoying term for everything. It’s getting to the point where if someone mentioned HD in my vicinity, everyone within a 500 yard radius falls silent waiting for my outburst of fury, like Hitler when he found out about Owen’s late equaliser. (What the fuck? Check it).

Take the aforementioned hard disk recorder. They kept referring to it as a fucking HD recorder, the inference being that it was high definition not that it had a hard drive in it.

Like most people of my era I know that HD Ready means that a television is capable of displaying a high definition signal. I know that Full HD means that it can show a resolution of 1920 x 1080. I know that normal Freeview boxes can’t decode a high definition signal so it’s an irrelevance whether you have an HDTV. I know Freeview HD boxes will be out soon.

You also have the groups of people that believe that because something says it’s HD Ready, that should mean that it has a high definition tuner in it. Read my lips. It. Doesn’t. Mean. That. And. Never. Will.

On that note, it’s weekend time!

  1. The peculiarly Northern reaction to ‘the Magic Lantern’ going out…

  2. Off topic but I want to let everyone concerned know I have written a big complaint to Johnston Press (the Gasjet’s parent company) on behalf of myself and all the other fucked off commenters on the Gazette (not in those words obviously!) because I have gone on this morning looking forward to reading comments on the local MPs expenses claims and 7 comments have gone already. I was just so fucked off because now those comments will be left until Monday I wrote an email to JP. If they don’t reply I think we should make a mass complaint to the PCC.

    • Email me the reply you get, if any. I doubt they’re going to employ a moderator over the weekend off the back of an email though.

      • I will do if I get a reply, I didn’t get one last time. I am just so sick to death of this deleting as I am sure everyone else is.

  3. Well done TB, I note there are fewer posters now than ever, probably because people have had enough.

    • Exactly it is a case of the Gazette won’t do anything, not they can’t do anything.

  5. Given that BOTH of their name servers have literally taken Sunday to be a day of rest, I think Johnston Press have some bigger problems to tend to.

That’s presumably a tidy amount of revenue they’ll have forfeited (Scotsman.com isn’t working) for the sake of not investing in redundancy in their network…

  6. yes the site is unobtainable……………..any reason as to why?

    They were always slow.

will they use this opportunity to change their site to prevent the continuation of the deletions farce?

    • I can’t get on for some reason, I wonder what’s going on? Quite coincidental how its the day after I sent a very strong worded complaint about the Gasjet but its probably not even related.

      • I’m not so sure Johnston Press have pulled their entire network of sites off the back of your complaint, TB, but full marks for attaining my level of paranoia!

    • What’s the link to Harold, I’ve only just gone on now and as usual the fucking cunt has deleted all the comments again. I am so glad I complained now, hopefully they’ll get a much needed kick up the arse and sort it out

  8. its about a scumbag/chav who threatened to slit a coppers kids throats, you know the sort, the sort of shit that is imported and gives Blackpool a bad name, making life hell for propern folk, the sort of shit that should be shoved into gas chambers.

Where is Adolf Hitler , now that we need him?

    • Oh yeah I read that in the Gazette, he wasn’t ‘good enough’ for the slums of Pretend City so they sent him here and that makes my blood boil. Blackpool has enough pondlife within our own borders without the paupers next door sending us anymore.

  9. On an unrelated but rather interesting note; I was looking at the Gordon Marsden article on Wikipedia yesterday and I noticed how our good friend geezer466 (not seem them for a while on here) posted a criticism about Marsden and him living in Brighton. Then it was removed by an anonymous IP address. I went on to the talk page of the user and it was a multiple use IP for ‘Parliament of the UK’, in other words somebody on the inside. Then I also noticed how the same user attempted (unsuccessfully, lol) to get the Marsden article listed for ‘Page protection’ (anyone not familiar withWikipedia basically means noone can alter the article without permission) citing an article on this blog claiming the users of this blog had a campaign against Marsden and we were apparently using Wikipedia to push our personal agenda. Whatever happened to free speech? Just thought I’d let everyone know anyway.

    • Wikipedia isn’t under any obligation to allow people to edit it. Sure, thats how it became the great resource that it is but it’s just a site run by a guy at the end of the day.

Did they really put that about this site?

I get hits from that Parliament IP address as well…
