Right-leaning Blackpool blog covering South Shore, North Shore, Marton, Bispham, Cleveleys and the rest of the Fylde discussing politics, local life, tourism, national issues and the rest of the world. Lively discussions encouraged!
Interestingly the Gazette has omitted another article from the website although this time quite understandably. Hamish Howitt has closed down completely. I am not saying he deserved to go broke or anything but I will say I think he only has himself to blame wasting all that money he supposedly never had on a pointless battle. I can understand the Gazette hasn’t put it up because there will be fireworks going off. All the usual pro-smokers will hijack the thread with cries of ‘Nazism’ and ‘fascism’ many of them not even knowing what those awful words mean and I will be there speaking on behalf of the 80% who support the ban and all my comments will get deleted. I wish the Gazette would stop treating him like a hero and giving him free publicity, he is a law breaker yet again they have given a whole front page this morning to have his soapbox and like a child throwing a rattle out the pram he is hitting out at regeneration works in Blackpool calling the fabulous Central Corridor a waste of money. Now despite claiming he is broke again he is still claiming he is fighting the ban in the European Court of Human Rights. I have studied the Human Rights Act and in NO WAY is it breached by the smoking ban. Sorry for the rant this guy just makes my blood boil because I hate smoking NOT smokers before they bite my head off smoking.
I wish they hadn’t, why do they keep giving him a propaganda platform, he is a law breaker not a hero or celebrity. There are actually important issues happening in Blackpool and they give Hamish the front page it really annoys me. Like I say I am not saying he deserved to go broke, but he can scapegoat the politicians all he want. But for once Gordon Marsden actually did the right thing and Hamish only has himself to blame for this.
I find the smoking ban bit of a double edge sword for myself as a smoker. On the one hand it’s better for the staff working in pubs and its much more pleasant to go eat in pub/restaurant style places which are totally smoke free. What i don’t understand why pub landlords/club owners etc. don’t get the right to choose. Much like licence to sell alcohol, why can’t people be given the ability to apply for a smoking licence in places that don’t serve food.
It would give the government a new income source, stop the supposed loss of business some pubs feel they have been hit by due to the smoking ban and give people more control over there own business. If it can be done with alcohol why not smoking? I guess its just another example of PC labour oppression and the taking away of choice. The same is happening to the car; soon we’ll all have to drive 1 litre Blue Motion Polo’s rather then sweet 3.5 litre v6’s in the communist state of Britain.
Looking at the fact that the world’s saviour, Gordon Brown, can’t negotiate a climate change deal, I think we’ll be allowed our 3.5 litre luxuries for a bit longer!

They might have omitted it from the site but it was on the front page of at least the early edition!

As a matter of interest here is a brief summary of the European Convention on Human Rights (the parent document to the HRA) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Convention_of_Human_Rights#Convention_articles
As you will see NOT one of those articles is breached by the smoking ban.
