Nice to see the gritters haven’t been out and roads such as Hawes Side Lane, Ansdell Road, Whitegate Drive, Church Street, Central Drive, Albert Road and Dickson Road were and in some cases still are slushy, icy and dangerous. No wonder there were so many emergency services vehicles about.
I drove from South Shore to Cleveleys this morning and only once I went on to the promenade at Gynn Square was I able to go more than about 10 mph.

Blackpool council, what a load of GrITS!

I hereby grant you license to abuse the hell out of the council on this thread!

Do Blackpool have their own gritters – or do they buy the service in from Lancashire? Sounds like an expensive thing for a unitary authority to buy itself.
Fylde’s gritting is done by Lancashire County Council – and because we’ve got very little snow and ice compared to the rest of the county I think Clifton Drive has been gritted and St Thomas’s (not convinced of the Crescent/St Annes Road West in the centre as there’s definitely ice on the zebras). So if you come south you may need snow chains.

I don’t think it matters. I think either way the council needs to organize or provide gritting. It might cost some money to provide it, but I dread to think of the insurance claims incurred today never mind the cost to health and policing services.

C’mon… Surely it isn’t reasonable to expect this council to exist for the purpose of serving the tourism industry and its residents, is it?

Have the roads near the Cunt-Callows and other Cunt-councillors been gritted?
loading...
The ones near the Fowlers haven’t, I can tell you that.

Can anyone remember the ‘yellow box type thingys’? They used to be on certain streets full of sand/grit. Have they all been removed on elf and safety grounds? Where I now live they have them all over the place and have come in handy.

Had to ring the police on Saturday evening at about 10.00pm to tell them that I had not seen any gritters out and yet there was black ice on many of the roads because of the freezing conditions, the police rung Blackpool council 24 hr help line to advise them off my concern, guess what 20 minutes later the gritters came out, the excuse for them not coming out earlier was that they thought we were going to get some rain so wanted to wait as it would have washed the grit away, they also have to wait for the ok from someone high up the chain of command, seems to me that they should be sacked as they are not capable of doing the job, considering today’s balls up. Cost me half a nights earnings as I was not going to risk having a accident in my taxi and putting my no claims bonus at risk as well as having to pay out £350.00 access. The people in charge of highways are complete tossers and not fit for purpose, instead of traffic management its more like traffic congestion, I’m sure they have a plan to cause as much congestion as possible in the town centre with all the different road closures and one way streets as well as the bloody cycle lanes that will be making an appearance this year,so it wont be long before we are promoted to category 1 from category 2 as there are grants available then, to try and ease the congestion,it does not help that the chap who works at Blackpool council and writes the local transport plan for the town is a non motorist,I have had the pleasure of meeting him,it was pissing down and he arrived on his bloody bike for the meeting, mind you he did inform me that he does not own a car or drive relies on Public transport as well as his bike, God help us who rely on driving in the town for a living.

I’d heard similar about the reluctance to go out and put rock salt out on the roads!

Dave,
Taxi drivers are a scourge on society. Any circumstances that prohibit the amount of taxi drivers on the road can only be good.
Most taxi drivers think they own road when in reality they are an underclass and should be treat this way. As far as pecking orders go, you are lower than a snakes belly.
Have you ever considered seeking out a more Honourable job and then you children won’t be embarrassed when their classmates ask them what you do for a living .

Surprised the Conservatives let him be associated with them. They’re just as PC as any other party.
I agree, though.

Where I live there was a couple of inches of snow which meant I was crawling around at 10mph all the way from Highfield Rd to town this morning. But then on a trip to the Trafford Centre about 3 the M55 was all clear and I continued a normal. The only problem I really encountered all day was an idiotic taxi driver tailgating me in the fucking snow on Central Drive on my way home tonight. If he wants to drive like a prat then fine he can fucking well pay for my damages when he slams into the back of me.

Talk about a conflict of interest, how can this David Simper write the local transport plan which should involve all road users, when he know sweet FA about cars,he is heavily involved in cycling lobbies through his involvment of the CTC. Only thing he is interested in is promoting more cycling, would not mind if we were in a nice warm climate, but who wants to cycle in the sort of unpredictable weather we receive in the UK. Anyhow one good thing to come from this snowfall is knowing that his bike is no use to him what so ever. Would you like a lift in my nice warm motorcar.

policy manager, gave an update on a range of
issues including a £2M cycling projects fund

Well I went to Tesco this afternoon – the queue on whatever the road’s called that goes past Progress House before the Tesco roundabout and then onto Glasdon was at a standstill – and I had to park on ice. But the roads weren’t all that bad. Perhaps the weather’s warming up enough for the ice not to last too much longer – we can hope anyway!

Seems after the backlash from the public they went on gritter overdrive. I went up to Bispham from South Shore last night around 8.30pm thinking it’d be an ice rink and it was just slushy and okay to drive on.
Temperature showed 3 degrees C in the car so you may be right about it warming up. Seems ok today.

I must say that I travelled through the early hours of monday morning by car from South London to Blackpool to film with BBC news regarding the campaign for the posthumous pardon for my dad Mr Darrell Pierre. All the the streets in London and I must have passed through at least 5 different local
boroughs before reaching the M1. They all had gritters and snow ploughs. The roads were fine. The pavements were being gritted by road sweepers with thier trolleys. My journey along the motorway was pretty good until I reached the junction to turn on to the M55 towards Blackpool. It was shocking!!! 90 minutes 15 miles. Preston new road was grid locked and I saw 1 Lancashire County Council gritter. I have said before that purpose built gritters are expensive and only used a few months of the year, however the refuge trucks which all councils or their contractors have many of could be adapted as temporary snow ploughs with a light weight container of salt to be realsed on to the roads. If bin men can’t get to work there is now point vehicles being left dormant when they could be at work doing what they can. Even a few fire engines could be adapted in the same way to help out after all they are now the fire and rescue service. This idea would help the Police and Ambulane serivce and those of us that need to get out and about and earn a hard living. Blackpool roads and pavements were by far the worst state I have seen in the 250 mile journey. Blackpool is a great place and is I hope moving forward in the right direction. Snow excuse!!!

Quite right Stephen!
But you should know better than anyone that the world revolves around London (me, bitter? lol) so I’m not surprised they have an abundance of gritting hardware.
Plus I suspect Londoners would kick off to high heaven about it if they didn’t grit, whereas I think we’re a bit more placid up here! Having said that, there has been a backlash forcing transport bosses to get involved in tit for tat mudslinging. The result being gritter overload, albeit a few days too late.
Blackpool has been left behind not only in education, not only in health. Not only in honesty and not only in wealth.
But in gritters as well!
