Chip and bin

Disgruntled council tax payers have often muttered about the lengths their council will go to in order to extract cash from them. This is no more apparent than in Fylde: residents are quite rightly enraged about the underhand, number-fiddling methods employed by John Coombes’ apparat in order to raise their council tax.

In order to compound the misery, Fylde and Wyre are set to deploy a new Big Brother data mining platform called Waste Collector to their refuse collection services, meaning they will be creating a database that stores data associating waste output to individual homes. Amongst other things they will be using this system to spy on you and to record how much you participate in recycling.

“Waste Collector records the participation history of every household and actively highlights those areas performing poorly. It also highlights individual properties who may suddenly stop participating or who regularly contaminate.” – Bartec Systems, creator of Waste Collector

How will they know which bin is associated with which address, you might ask. Simple. When they were doling out free wheelie bins, they neglected to tell you that the bin had an RFID tracking chip in it for future use. I think we all know what that means, but Fylde Borough Council’s infamous David Eaves is trying to sell the system in a different way.

He reckons that having this chip and bin system is a benefit to residents but how can this be?

Will it mean more frequent refuse collections? Er, no.

Will it mean we can dump more waste per collection? Er, no.

Will it mean efficiency savings can be made resulting in a council tax reduction? Er, no, although this system will somehow save £30,000 per year in Fylde and £22,000 in Wyre.

So what the fuck is the benefit, Eavsey?

“It will tell frontline staff how many bins each property has and which householders need help with collections. It will tell managers which collections have been missed at a glance as collected houses appear on the screen in green while missed ones appear red.”

Ingenious. However, I think you might want to rephrase that to something along these lines;

“It will tell me how much rubbish each household is generating and recycling so I can see how to best implement a levy based upon it, because Fylde Borough Council has no idea what the fuck it’s playing at when it comes to managing finance so we’ll just keep shafting our ratepayers with underhand tax hikes.”

  1. Too bloody true. Fylde is a perfect picture of incompetents who demand more and more money from it’s people to fund it’s incompetence. They also seem to want social change and “redevelopment” like they are a New Labour outfit. It also seems to have successfully silenced any comments on the Gazette as well.

    However despite Conservatives polling well nationally they actually lost a seat in the LCC elections and the majorities were enormously reduced in those seats they did win. With a little co-operation among opposition parties the Conservatives won’t have that much longer in power – though rumours abound that Coombes’ support is waning. Let’s hope so. And worryingly it is also believed by many that the push for a City of the Fylde merging us all is welcomed by him as a good way for him to get more power. Mr Callow has a far better record of the council working well.

    • The Lib Dems have just announced that they are in favour of the electorate being able to recall MP’s like they do in the states.

      • There was a discussion document looking at way of recalling councillors etc. last year. Its not a Lid-Dem idea.
        There is only about 15 months to the next Borough elections. Which is just about long enough for the new party to make some inroads to the Fylde.

        I think it started in Frustrated neck of the woods.

        Long Live the new party!
