It is a popular and also very unfounded claim and tactic of Labour supporters/MPs to hold this outdated and misguided belief that all Labour MPs are ‘working class’ and all Tories are ‘toffs’. I think it is a load of bollocks.

When I cast my vote on May 6 or whenever it’s going to be I will look at 2 main things in my decision; the policies the party offers and what the candidate offers. I don’t give a toss whether they’re a man or woman, what their sexuality or ethnic background is and certainly not what school they went to. I think people that vote based on class are being very petty.

Why should it matter whether an MP was brought up on a council estate or born into an aristocratic family. Surely what is best for the country is that the most able and qualified candidate gets the job.

This link shows a long long list of current Labour MPs who by definition could be called ‘toffs’. I might also like to point out that many high-profile past and present Tory PMs, leaders and MPs are from modest upbringings. Heath, Thatcher and Major all attended state schools as did ex-leaders William Hague and Michael Howard. While Tony Blair and many of the current Labour cabinet are public school alumni. Also Clement Attlee often seen as Labour’s greatest PM and one of the great PMs in history the man behind the NHS and welfare state attended a public school.

What I am pointing out here is the utter hypocrisy of the Labour Party. Virtually no Labour MPs today are ‘working class’ and they have the gall to go around childishly branding Tory MPs as ‘toffs’. I don’t care what ‘class’ an MP is I vote for who I like the look of politically.

Here in Blackpool South ‘local MP Gordon Marsden is a toff and Tory PPC Ron Bell is from modest upbringing. But I will not vote against Marsden because of his background but because I feel he has been a terrible MP for Blackpool South.

My message to Labour is grow up and stop being such lying hypocrites. These class war tactics are underhand, childish and petty. But what I find most appalling is that gullibile Labour supporters buy into all this snobbery. But then again negative campaigning is about the only method of campaigning Labour actually knows.

  1. Absolutely excellent TB, under labour we have 2 more classes:

    1) Sponging class, DSS families with many and/or disabled children, eg The Pollits,Yusufs and the vile Mgrawleys,al scum of the highest order.

    2) PC “victim” class, ‘oppressed’ minority groups
, who wield dispoportionate influence by abuse of the Human rights act, playing the victim etc etc.

Labour is the party of hypocrisy and contradiction.

Under labour, inequality as measured by the Gini coefficent has grown as has education qualification inflation.

They are in the last chance saloon of piss pot politics and the game is over for them and they know it.

    • Too true Harold, this country has been brought to its knees under Labour and yet people still think they deserve another chance. Brown has tried every trick in the book to salvage his reputation but now he is pitching for the ‘One more chance’ sympathy vote. You have had one more chance in the last 2 elections and proven Labour does nothing but lie. LABOUR OUT 2010 MARSDEN OUT 2010!!!

Plenty of Tory MPs are from modest backgrounds including Eric Pickles, William Hague, David Davis and Liam Fox to name but a few. Even if they were there is nothing wrong with being well-off because most of them will have worked hard to get there something the Labour Party opposes.

  5. Does it matter how much money an MP has? What’s important is that they understand how to run the country and are intellectually bright. Labour has presided over 13 years of half-thought out policies, policy amendments and doing everything they can to make sure the election is likely to go their way (altering boundaries, importing migrants, making as many as possible poor and employment opportunities in real jobs highly unlikely).
Sex education tinkering has led to increased teenage pregnancies. 24 hour drinking has led to more drink problems. Obesity campaigns – still the numbers are increasing. Corporation tax rates cut for small companies then raised again in time for a big recession.
Do I really think Cameron is up to the job? No. Do I think our local Conservatives are doing a good job? No. But I really do fear what would happen to the country with another term of Gordon Brown as experience has shown he really isn’t up to the job. Why on earth would anyone intelligent vote for someone they know isn’t good enough?

    • “Does it matter how much money an MP has?”

      Yes as it effects perspective.

      GD Star Rating

      • No it doesn’t. Empathy is what’s important and listening to your electorate -not assuming you know best. And if having money affects perspective then we’re going to have to have a salary and allowance review. Anyone earning £60k basic plus lots of extras in this area would be classed as very well off compared to the vast majority of the population.

        • Yes it does. Im not talking about being “well off”ether.
Having millions in your account effects the way you live which effects your perspective. Marie Antoinette said it best with “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”.

When you have loads of cash you don’t see things in the same light. Different things are important to you, you live your life in a different way. I have been on both sides of the fence i know from personal exp.
          It’s common sense anyway.
Look at the way cash effects loads of lotto winners. Some of them even go fucking mental even.

Empathy is what’s important as well as listening to your electorate but you see, when you have millions and only hang around with cronies and other poeple that have power and millions you LOSE that empathy.

Can you empathise with someone living in a single room slum in the third world?
Maybe a little; maybe a little more if u have ever lived on the street but you cant really understand the real hardships of there life unless you go over and live some of what they live. That’s no different then a millionaire jet set lifestyle of some MP’s and the common man on the street.

These high up torys toffs and labour snobs, do you really think they know how you live ya life? Do you even think they give a fuck about your opinion and freedoms?
Chirst half of the fucking MPs dont know there is anything north of london bar scotland.

History proves from both labour and tory gov’s that they dont give a fuck. Now less then ever before.

Even if the torys get in do you think all these millionare power mongers are going to stop putting up more cameras to watch you more green taxs etc to control you? We can only dream.

          • That’s not my experience of people from public school and very wealthy backgrounds. True I don’t know anyone from Eton but I wouldn’t have thought Harrow and Gordonstoun were that different. Generally they are very good at eating terrible food put in front of them and living in poverty from their university days when their fathers wanted to teach them independence.
Let them eat cake is a myth nowadays – unless said in jest to really annoy someone they dislike. You can’t live on both sides of the fence – both my parents was from a working class background – one council estate, one terraced back street and both went to grammar school and got middle class jobs. So yes I have seen both sides but it’s impossible to really say you’ve lived both sides as you can’t change class, only money.

  6. It doesnt matter to me that the tories tend to have tons of money prior to becoming mps, but it does matter to jealous Labour voters who are too blinkered to see their own political heroes are also loaded and have lost whatever connection they once had with the grass roots.

Classic example of this is adulterous bully boy John Prescott who has ended up with a 9 bathroom country retreat out of his tenure in the Labour party. Nice going for an old leftie that was kept around to make brainwashed Old Labour voters and back benchers think that policymaking would take into account their out of date ideas.

    • That I do agree on it is a problem of all parties not just the Conservatives. Nick Clegg is a fine example of how out of touch some MPs can be. He is a multi-millionaire with a multi-million pound townhouse in a swanky London suburb and during the credit crunch he had the gall to claim he is ‘feeling the pinch’ having to go ‘downmarket’ from Ocado and Waitrose to Sainsburys and M&S for his shopping, my heart bleeds. Also Labour MP Keith Vaz holds a seat in the very working class constituency of Leicester East yet like Marsden he shows no connection with the area whatsoever having never ever lived in Leicester living in £1.5m executive home in North London, what a joke.

  8. On a slightly unrelated note the Gasjet is censoring posts again, me and geezer466 both wrote posts on an article critical of Gordon Marsden and the Labour loving Gasjet have selectively chosen not to restore them AGAIN. I am getting fed up with this, they should be impartial.

We say it because the Gazette website is a joke; posts are constantly being deleted for no reason the Gazette administrators are selectively not restoring posts that criticise Marsden or Labour, the word ‘Liebour’ is also blocked as an ‘unsuitable word’. It is just a complete joke basically.

Thank you for your patience with a relative newbie and for the explanation.
I am aware that the IT guys at Fylde Borough Council have been instructing the councillors how to best use, comment and remove things from the Gazette (gasjet) site, perhaps the other parties are doing some censoring on their own count although I will agree that gasjet seem very pro Hamish Howitt even putting spin on some reports.

That would make a lot of sense I have had my suspicions for a while there has been some kind of political interference on that site. On the Hamish Howitt thing I totally agree, they are definitely pro-Hamish much to my great annoyance. The man is a lawbreaker and yet they treat like him like some kind of local hero. I am actually tempted to write to them complaining about this but I doubt they will be interested, they have ignored my last 3 emails complaining about comment deleting.

              1) If you are on benefits and you have another child, no more money for that child, NOT a penny.

              2) If you have a test for downs syndrome during pregnancy and it shows that the child will be disabled etc,if you choose to go ahead with the birth, NOT A PENNY IN BENEFITS. You forfeit the right to such aid.

  9. And on the subject of toffs running the country Churchill is a perfect example. From an exceedingly rich family, educated at public schools (including Harrow) he not only gained fame for his war efforts but also his budget which included the introduction of new taxes on the wealthy to allow for the creation of new social welfare programmes. So are toffs always out of touch and unable to think of those with less money? Don’t think so.
