Politics overload today but I have to mention the Lord Ashcroft farce. Okay, he’s a non-dom, and he doesn’t pay any UK tax on his offshore investments.

Why is it a non-story? Simple. Labour accepts donations from non-doms and so do the Liberal Democrats.

Unsurprisingly the unelected Lord of Darkness has been in the media calling for Ashcroft to be investigated even though he knows that it’s not possible to retrospectively “vet” people that are already appointed to the House of Lords. Even so, you have to be a UK taxpayer to sit in the Lords. Ashcroft promised to become such, and for the last 10 years has declared all of his UK income to the inland revenue.

The inevitable link to Dave came when Mandelson declared that he must have been party to this “concealment”. He’s whipping it up into a nice media frenzy which is perfect for Gordon’s rating in the polls.

Labour have spun this to perfection. If the Conservatives are guilty, so are Labour. Gordon Brown himself appointed Lord Paul who is himself non-domiciled and has donated to Labour. He’s even on the privy council. But the public perception is that the Conservatives have staged some sort of a cover up, done something wrong and are more sleazy than Labour.

Maybe Peter Mandelson is just bitter than he was sacked for concealing a loan of £373,000 from former paymaster general Geoffrey Robinson, but nobody’s talking about that.

People have short memories..

  1. It is disgusting and shamefull that Ashcroft has been allowed to use money he should have paid in tax to BUY a Tory win in twenty or thirty seats (Which he has part done).

If any of you think that is ok. please stop saying you are interested in democracy, because you are not.

    • So if that money was based in the UK, everything would be OK? Democracy would be saved?

        • They do, as do the Liberal Democrats.

Labour has a donating peer (Lord Paul) in exactly the same position as Ashcroft, yet this story is all about how bad it is that the Conservatives are doing it.

The Liberal Democrats have accepted cash from non-doms as well.

    • No that isn’t shocking. What’s shocking is the whole system of allowing non-doms as a concept so easily. All you have to say is that you don’t intend to remain here forever if you were born abroad, have a foreign father or you’ve bought your final resting place overseas and bingo – less tax for the super-rich. You can even live here for over 50 years and have had a UK passport for all that time and no-one will question your domiciliary because of that.
All seats are bought by political donors be they of the likes of Lord Ashcroft or the unions. To pretend that politics and democracy somehow works as it should is naiive. And don’t forget that this government has been trying for years to get donations to political parties to be tax-free – so if anyone donated it wouldn’t really matter where the money came from as far as tax goes.
