I talked about a month ago about the council thwarting Pierre Coulon’s attempts to buy a new venue for his casino after the previous one suffered collateral damage in an arson attack last year.

They decreed that casinos were a “town centre use” and in trying to force Mr Coulon to locate his casino in the Winter Gardens, they would only permit him to use the Number One club on Bloomfield Road for 4 years.

Anyway, today they have reportedly seen sense and granted unconditional planning permission for the casino.

I’d like to say this was an example of the council turning over a new leaf of common sense, but I suspect I’ll be sourly disappointed.

  1. Not sure it is a viable business having looked at the accounts, but it certainly wouldn’t have been on a four year permission. Congratulations to Mr Coulon et al and hope you prove me massively wrong with enormous profits.

      • Problem is though that you need a lot of cash to set it up – and that means interest payments which can be a killer as well as expensive licences. Still let’s hope it does make enough to do really well and keep all those people in work and the owners enough to keep investing here.

  2. Absolutely Frustrated, I really wish them luck as I do everyone investing their hard earned cash in to the Fylde Coast.

  3. I think what happened was that the Council realised that when Mr Coulon said he wasn’t willing to invest in Bloomfield Road for just 4 years and then move to St John’s Square – he actually meant it. And slowly but surely the Council realised that even they couldn’t make him.

Might also be something to do with the comment from Mr Coulon that it would be foolhardy to risk walking through a lonely Square late at night looking for a transport home with £2000 winnings in your pocket.

I am told the St John’s Square Traders met with Steve Weaver and Peter Callow today to make a last ditch attempt to persuade the Council not to close the Square to buses and taxis. It is the Traders’ unanimous view that this should not be allowed to happen. Their views were rejected. Closure will be with us by May 2010.

Best of luck to Pierre Coulon.

  4. [...] after a flurry of complaints, Mr Coulon was granted a more flexible lease and will not be forced to move, but the intention was there: get a casino [...]
