MPs get medals for visiting war zones. MPs get medals for visiting war zones. MPs get medals for visiting war zones.

No, no matter how many times I say it, I still can’t believe it.

There’s an armed forces parliamentary scheme to which MPs can join, and if they spend 10 years in this scheme, which requires them to spend about 22 days per year in a war zone, they get a nice medal. Not for bravery, not for contributing to the war effort, just for being there surrounded by armed guards doing fuck all like they always do.

As a further slap in the face to the armed forces, they even get ranks and a uniform as well! Yes, an MP starts at the rank of major and can obtain a rank of colonel – without doing anything at all.

Azeem Ibrahim of politics.co.uk puts it well;

“The real rank of ‘Colonel’ is one which is earned by years of dedication, discipline, getting up before dawn, selfless service to the defence of the realm, and bloody hard work; MPs reach a rank of the same name by sticking around in a ‘scheme’ for long enough.”

The mind does, indeed, boggle.

    Talking to ex army chaps deployed in Afghan every time Brown goes out they have the threaten the troops picked to meet him for the photo op with a disrepute charge if they tell him what they think of him.

    Most of them would rather defuse a bus load of IED’s rather than shake the hand of Brown or the other mumpty at Defence!!
