We’ve seen Blackpool tarting the town up with hoardings in empty shops but up on Tyneside the council have thought of an even better scheme.

Fake shop fronts.

And I’m not joking.

Check it out.

I just hope the likes of Helen France aren’t reading this.

  2. Phil sorry to hijack but on the regeneration theme, this article had me in stitches, regards Harold: http://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/blackpoolnews/Prom-skateboard-park-safety-fears.6146769.jp

    • To be honest I thought they called it natural selection. If a boarder is going to do a jump over the tram tracks, on their head – maybe literally – be it!

  3. This is not a new idea and has been tried and has worked in other countries across the world Paris and New Orleans to name just two. The thinking goes that a lot of people just don’t have much imagination so don’t trust them to have one.

  4. The Empty Shops Network across the UK is an imaginative way to use on a temporary basis business space which currently has no tenant. As Liverpool has proved decisively with Capital of Culture 2008, the Arts can play a key role in attracting in fresh investment and helping residents feel good about their locale – Blackpool has plenty of commercial activities, but lacks an Arts hub – The Grundy just ain’t enough.

  5. We’ve got the Grand Theatre as well which I’m quite proud of, but I agree we could do with more arts events. The idea of our local council taxes being splurged on it doesn’t appeal at all though, especially when you look at who’s in charge.

Why not just make sure shop fronts look clean tidy and put examples of local schools artwork in the windows?

    • Not a bad idea at all.

I’d have liked to see them do that in Talbot Square with the hoardings around the former Yates’, but as you’ll be aware they chose to lash £20,000 out on commissioning an artist instead.

It would be excellent if the council were to keep on top of the aesthetics, be it shop fronts or the latest multi squillion pound project. But in this town, things fall into disrepair very quickly, and the finger has to be pointed at the council.

Take a look at St. John’s Square – there are cracks appearing in it already and it has only been finished for about 6 months.

Another issue is that a few parts of the town currently have the black cloud of the compulsory purchase order hovering above them, and are included in various “masterplans”. Their owners are therefore not inclined to develop them – not that the council would even let them!

  6. I went to the Grand last week or the week before for the Hilton concert and if all of Blackpool looked like the square then Blackpool would be onto a winner. However once you got out of the square (walking back to the car park) it looked like a slum town dirty streets closed shops. Impressions are important even if its just pictures filling up shop windows it looks better then what is there now.
