Eighteen year old Steven Higginson was in Blackpool magistrates’ court yesterday accused of damaging a garage window after a row with his girlfriend. He pleaded guilty and was told to pay a whopping £40 compensation.

Despite claiming that he was bitten on the arm by his girlfriend in the argument, he said he thought that when the police turned up they would not ask too many questions and it would be him who would spend the night in the cells. So when 999 was called he did a runner.

However, the police felt the need to deploy their £3million heliwopter to track him down, at a cost of £540 per hour plus cost of two officers and a pilot onboard. They found him hiding under a trampoline in a garden.

I’m not suggesting that air support should never get used, but for a case like this the police already knew that he’d had an argument with his girlfriend and that he wasn’t a danger to anyone else. They knew he hadn’t hurt her. They knew that he’d turn up eventually, probably the following day.

He was running from them because he believed the police were a bunch of unfair Robocops that think they’re judge jury and executioner. He knew that they were a closely knit unit that would cover up for each other in any cases of malpractice. He believed that they wouldn’t even listen to his side of the story and lock him up anyway.

And they did, so he was right.

  1. It’s shocking that the helicopter was used for this. Sledgehammer and nut come to mind. Yet so many other crimes they can’t be arsed to go to. I can only conclude that they were so pissed off in having to do something that they went overboard no doubt as a result of watching some dodgy cop show in the station rather than actually doing any work before they were called out into the cold.

  3. Its a bit fucking crazy if the KNEW all that stuff before they sent the chopper out and the girlfeind did not up some mad storie.
Still what does not make sense to me that 999 was even call. I mean why would you ring 999 about a window getting smashed unless u could like SEE someones breaking in to your shit right there and then?

Whats next, 999 calls becos some kid booted a football at ya greenhouse by mistake? 999 calls when u drop a plate in the kitchen? Not unless its over someones head i hope.

    • The helicopter found him under a trampoline so he bombed it and ended up getting arrested in a garage.

I presume he broke the window of the garage and climbed in.

Basically, he’d done nothing at all apart from have an argument with his girlfriend and the helicopter was deployed.

The window was smashed out of fear of the police.

  4. we should add this to the gigantic bag of problems we have that we will all sit on and moan about – yet do nothing to help

  5. as its coming to the end of the financial year the police must have money to burn on aviation fuel, money thats left in the budget.
i would love to see how they can justify the money spent agaisnt the fine etc,its insane.
its time for crimes to be looked at in this way, ie costs agaisnt gravity of offence, especially minor ones like this.

  6. Good value, hell no. The modern police are useless in most of my experiences, they are overpaid and underworked. There are a few genuinely good ones I have had the pleasure of meeting but they are the exception rather than the rule. I find today’s police very poorly trained and they need to learn some manners, also what really annoys me is the way there is no accountability, they can get away with anything because coppers never grass each other up. Police officers are supposed to be honest and trustworthy, like trusting Bernard Matthews to look after your pet turkey as far as I’m concerned.

    • It certainly has whoever is in charge must have left the same ‘incompetence school’ as Weaver and overpaid jobsworth NWDA boss Steve Broomhead, another waste of space and taxpayers money.

PS; Forgot to add into my original comment for fuck sake scrap PCSOs one of the biggest wastes of taxpayers money ever. They cost billions and do sod all.

  8. Just think of the nicks they could muster if there were to put an infra red camera on that chopper and play it on the rooftops of Blackpool…..

See they found another today in the gasjet……….

those in the know will of course work out wtf I am on about..

    • lol, yeah, I saw that.

I’m surprised they haven’t put an “All Seeing Eye” CCTV camera on top of the tower yet.

      • Nope camera on the chopper for spotting and a fully laser targeted joystick guided air to ground missile system mounted atop the Tower to eradicate the chavs as they enter their hash havens :-) .

Do people realise the biggest worry of any government is that terrorists organisation get the hands on nuclear weapons.

I expect to awake one morning to find an article in the gasjet saying terrorists have detonated a 5 kilton device in Tyldesley Rd, but its ok as the only persons killed were drunks and dossers and only £15 worth of damage was caused.

  9. This case reminds me of an equally ridiculous waste of police resources when a woman was caught committing the hideously potentially deadly offence of eating an apple at the wheel. The police wasted £30,000 pursuing the case involving a police helicopter for photographic evidence, about 5 or 6 officers and several traffic patrol vehicles. This sort of wastefulness is not on and this is exactly the sort of money Labour just wastes.

    • It’s not just that though mate. Labour is not completely to blame. The Police have a level of corruption and mismanagement to answer for.

Remember the post I did last week about PCSOs being bullies? Remember the art student that was ambushed by 7 police officers because she was filming buildings for an art project and the reporting PCSO knew that she wasn’t doing anything wrong?

  10. Oh yes I agree totally, the Government is not totally to blame. As I said I feel many police officers are poorly trained and have attitude problems themselves. I am so sick of this double standards culture by where police can do what they want and nobody can do anything about it, the system sucks.
