Paul Nuttall MEP

I love UKIP. Ever since rubber-faced Farage appeared on the scene I have followed their ascent into the mix of single-issue fringe party politics, culminating in the acheivement of electing 12 Members of the European Parliament.

I was therefore delighted to see slap headed scouser Paul Nuttall MEP on the Politics Show earlier today with Gordon Burns, volleying forth a bizarre uncosted agenda.

Nuttall sounded very much like the classic little Englander; closer to the BNP than anything else. He wants to pump 40% more money into the armed forces, in particular to buy fighter planes and boost the navy. All he forgot to add was a 20 metre high perimeter wall surrounding the British Isles with “ENGLISH ONLY” painted on it.

He said that he wanted to cut 2 million public sector jobs with a view to recreating them in the private sector, including building more prisons;

“..we want a prison building programme because there’s not enough people in prison at the moment…”

No? What would be a good number then Paul?

I don’t think I am the only one that would like to point Mr Nuttall to the criminals that UKIP have parachuted in to stand for election as a fine starting point to this programme.

I’m not sure why Mr Nuttall was on the show, after all he is a MEP and not standing for election in the general. Perhaps the local UKIP candidate had been bullied out of the limelight by an oppressive UKIP regime – of which Nuttall is part – that seems to be doing a fairly good job of destroying the reputation of a once honourable party.

Paul Maynard (who the BBC amusingly labelled as Councillor Paul Maynard), Bill Greene and Penny Martin were on the show and were interviewed about local issues. None performed particularly well and it did seem like state-sponsored Tory bashing because the only person who could actually give any policy information was Maynard and each time it was pounced upon by the Liberal and Labour vultures sat to either side of him.

Penny Martin seemed desperate to negatively campaign against the Conservatives than push her own agenda: she didn’t even know what her agenda was when questioned. Not too surprising given that she’s only been the PPC for five minutes.

Liberal Democrat Bill Greene waffled around, sniping at Maynard but not making any major points of his own except to call for the Government to be fair and “to provide jobs for people in the area”, which I found to be quite a bizarre comment given Vince Cable’s call for savage cuts in the public sector.

Maynard mentioned the marriage allowance that would give £3 per week to married couples, and Martin and Greene went on the offensive immediately. Martin called it a stunt and Greene a gimmick. I have sympathy with that view and on the face of it, a gimmick is exactly what it is.

Paul Maynard went on to explain that the intention is for it to be a small demonstration of what the Government deems to be “good practice”. It’s a way of encouraging a better society. Penny Martin responded by saying that Labour offers the opportunity for families to engage, whatever that means. I don’t think she meant in the marriage sense, given that she said;

“the vast majority of families in Blackpool North and Cleveleys would not benefit from the Tory proposals”

Bill Greene made a great point when he questioned why the main parties were picking certain groups, such as married couples, to give benefits to rather than implementing policy to benefit everyone. But then he called the marriage allowance a tax, which I didn’t really understand. Labour certainly can’t call the Conservatives for trying to give this benefit out, after all, Labour have introduced endless tax credits and I’ve yet to see the benefit from one.

The best part was when Penny Martin was asked what Labour would do to help those over 60′s in Blackpool North and Cleveleys. Her banks of PPC rhetoric obviously haven’t been filled yet as computer said no and she was utterly rattled by the question, pausing to gasp for air. She then started waffling off topic about Andy Burnham being in the area and how “fabulous” it was that he actually sat down and listened to people. It’s just a shame, Penny, that MPs are only interested in constituents during an election campaign. Then she went off on a random one, saying the current “system” is a tax on dementia. What system? Do you suffer from dementia Penny?

Maynard hammered Martin by reminding her that there was a Royal Commission report on long term care 13 years ago and Labour ignored it, only to promise it again this time round with no detail or costing. On the subject of dementia, Maynard revealed that the number of places for dementia care had dropped 6% in recent years under Labour.

The Conservative policy on long term care requires those approaching retirement age to purchase an insurance policy for £8,000 which will then cover all of their future care requirements without them being forced to sell their homes. Presumably if you can’t pay, you get some sort of care anyway, but he didn’t say. I sort of agree with this, although it seems to be getting to the stage where we’re having to supplement services in addition to the tax we’re already paying for them, begging questions about how much of our tax is actually funding services in the first place.

Another big reason the more sentient pensioners end up forced to sell their homes is Council Tax that continues to rise at blockbuster rates, so I wonder what would the Conservatives do about that.

I thought Maynard was by far the most credible of the three, and I guess you would say that I would say that. But judge for yourselves, it’s available on iPlayer now. You can see Paul Nuttall’s craziness too, as well as some propaganda about Talbot Gateway and a cameo from Harold’s favourite council officer, Garry Payne.

  1. I agree I thought Paul Maynard was the most convincing by a country mile. I would liked to have heard more from the Lib Dem candidate on his policies for Blackpool North and Cleveleys if elected. I like some of the things the Lib Dem’s are offering re transport, the economy so hearing abit more about that would have been good.

    I would also liked to have seen the Labour candidate challenged on being the Discrimination / Window dressing candidate. She did make me laugh when she said I’m the local candidate, she sounds like a character from the League of Gentleman with that line especially since Paul Maynard has lived in Blackpool for four years.

    It was great television, we had politics and Blackpool looked great in the background, tv heaven for me.

    • Being a “local” candidate does seem to be a point that is being used a lot more than it ever was, perhaps to try and convince constituents that the person they’re voting for is like them and is interested in local issues.

      It’s a shame on a local Politics Show all we got was manifesto stuff. Whilst I know a bit about what Paul Maynard thinks about some local issues, I would have liked to see what the panel had to say about helping local business, the transport system in Blackpool and our failing schools. I’d have liked them to outline their vision for the town in 3 years.

      I guess you never get that, though.

      Perhaps it would have been interesting to hear about the Liberal Democrats’ policies on economics and transport but these are again national issues, and Vince Cable is on just about every TV show these days anyway!

      • It would be good to see the fringe parties tackling the ‘Big 3′ on big issues, but in Blackpool South I would love to see UKIP there watching Hamish make a total fool of himself. I would bet £10 if he as asked about a big issue like the economy, he would find some way of turning it into a rant about the smoking ban and it would also prove he is totally out of his depth.

        • They are just focussing on Maynard, Martin & Greene all week. They will be featuring someone from the Greens next week (probably a councillor from Lancaster) then the BNP the week after that.

          There will be an hour long debate on BBC Radio Lancashire on Friday but with no audience or phone in facilities!

          In short, the film crew are here all week and will not be overstretched with work following the 3 candidates so if there are any local issues which you think should be highlighted then email: nwt@bbc.co.uk

  3. I shall have to watch this on catch-up, but I can’t say I am surprised by Martin using negative campaigning, that’s all Labour actually knows. People are crediting Martin as a ‘worthy’ local candidate but personally from what I have read about her performance on the Politics Show she sounds like every other Labour MP/candidate more interested in cheap political pointscoring rather than representing the people. Excellent point about the UKIP criminals also Phil!!!! I have gone right off UKIP they are just becoming a bigger and bigger joke each day. Paul Nuttall is a big part of the problem. Its a shame really because Roy Hopwood seems like a decent candidate, but his party has been overun by fruitcakes. Don’t get me started on Andy Burnham as well, one of Labour’s class warriors (as shown by his performance on Question Time) and you know how I hate class warriors!!! He is also a smug, slimy little toad the worst Health Secretary we have ever had, I will be glad to see him busted down to Shadow Health Secretary in May.

  9. I see the bias broadcasting corporation (BBC) only see fit to allow the 3 main parties debate about nothing on the Politics show today from Blackpool,watching and listening to them all waffling on there certainly nothing to choose from any of them, they are all true party members,party first and foremost and spin the party line.It’s a pity Roy Hopwood for UKIP wasn’t on but of course Paul Nuttall made sure he had is coverage at the expense of Roy.

  10. Finally got around to watching it and I completely agree with Phil’s analysis; Paul Maynard was definitely the most credible. I thought Penny Martin calling herself the ‘LOCAL’ candidate was downright arrogant especially when Mr Maynard has actually lived in the area for 3 years and shown much more committment to Blackpool than Marsden or Humble. To me Penny Martin didn’t come across at all as a respectable local candidate, she came across as typical Labour more interested in political pointscoring and negative campaigning, no surprises there. Look at the way she dodged that question about the elderly and quickly dodged the question banging on about that slimy toad Andy Burnham. Andy Burnham listening? I think not. I once watched a documentary on BBC One about obesity where a journalist collared Burnham in his constituency and at first he seemed like a pleasant enough guy; he politely said I will happily do you an interview if you arrange it through my press secretary and went off to his surgery. Hours later he vanished into thin air so the journalist phoned his office getting very abrupt reply from a very snooty press officer saying he wasn’t interested. I don’t call that listening.

          • I didn’t know either but like I respect him as Paul Maynard the Conservative candidate as I have always known him, to me his condition is as irrelevant as his social background which that snob davie@layton seems obsessed with. But I live in Blackpool South so I can’t vote up there. Good luck with making your decision Harold, you actually have a serious UKIP candidate where you are as well.

              I understand why he doesn’t want to make an issue of it because it’s irrelevant but it may not harm his campaign if people are aware of it…

I see what you mean Phil, the trouble is if he doesn’t tell people about his condition people will continue to make ignorant insulting remarks like those you mention. But on the otherhand I can understand he doesn’t make a big deal because he doesn’t want people to see him as Paul Maynard the candidate with cerebral palsy. He wants to be seen as Paul Maynard the Conservative candidate.
