From one gravy train to another, waste of space overweight ship’s steward John Prescott has been rewarded for his eventful career in politics by being given a place in the House of Lords.
It’s quite stunning that this old Labour buffoon – who slept with his secretary and punched a voter in the face – can be worthy of a place within those hallowed walls, and quite bizarre too given that he famously said he didn’t want to be made a peer.
Peers don’t get paid a salary unless they are also a government minister like Lord Mandelson and Lord Sugar were. But what they do get is a second home allowance and you don’t have to dangle that carrot for long before these greedy bastards are filling their boots, and Prescott is undeniably a greedy bastard.
Indeed, in 2008, more than 100 lords claimed over £50,000 in expenses with the highest, Lord Laird, claiming a stonking £73,000. One in particular, former Labour MP Lady Irene Adams, claimed £42,354 in daily and overnight subsistence for 143 Lords visits: £296 per day. On top of this she claimed £12,016 travel expenses for journeys from Scotland to London.
I was under the impression that Lords were to be elected under this new hippie coalition, so how come all the parties are appointing their old stalwarts into this house?

Well said Harold, Prescott is a total waste of space. He reminds me of Hazel Blears (another total class snob) constantly banging on about how ‘ordinary’ and ‘working class’ they are. I remember that childish stunt Blears pulled when David Cameron wanted a picture outside the Salford Lads Club (in the chipmunk’s constituency) and she a bunch of Labour sheep to protest outside saying we don’t want a ‘posh boy’ in our town. These people are supposed to be grown adults yet they act so juvenile, it really is pathetic. You all know how much I hate class warfare. But Prescott is the biggest toff of all yet he still tries to keep up this joke he is ‘working class’. Its like these Arthur Scagill lites like Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley, they claim they are proudly ‘working class’ yet they drive posh cars, take six-figure salaries and live in swanky £750k country houses. Nothing wrong with having those things but for them to claim they are ‘working class’ is just hypocritical. Prescott in particular really makes me laugh because he is such a fake it is untrue. I recently read a story about him in the paper where he was pulling some well-rehearsed publicity stunt by taking a TV crew to a working men’s club. When you watch him on telly he comes across as the ‘down to earth’ ordinary man in the pub as the TV crew generously makes him appear like that. However from a real-life story from the owner of the club, the true story is very different. Apparently he appeared in his chauffeur-driven Jag escorted in by minders. He went straight over to the owner/manager and had a chat with him for about 5 minutes, then he played a game of snooker with a local youth who was there with his parents. Before the parents had to chance to so much as say hello, he was rushed over the dancefloor and filmed dancing with a few old ladies. He then spent the rest of the night (off-camera) chatting with the President of the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union not so much as interacting with any of the ‘people’. That just says it all the guy is a big phoney.

I saw that TV programme about class and his attitude towards “southerners” was childish and unfair. He showed extraordinary prejudice towards southerners;total wanker.
Has he ever thought of judging people by their character and NOT their class or region?
Incredible actions from a man, whose party is obsessed with race and ‘equality’;equality as long as you not a southerner or from a different class.
For me its about a class of person,NOT wealth;their wealth in character that really counts.
Just because someone is rich doesnt mean that they are a cunt,a lotiof philthranopists are wealthy decent people who worked hard, compare them to scum like the POLITT freaks who excrete disabled kids to get money.
He is a BOORgeoise degenerate, complete with a tatty, tacky, twatty plastic slapper of a wife.
Lord fat fucker Prescott;scum bag extraordinare!

Yet another hypocrite enjoying all the money and pretending to be concerned about ordinary people struggling not to go bankrupt. When will the sheep learn that the Labour party and unions of today are leading them a merry dance? They’ll say anything they think the sheep want to hear to continue lining their pockets to an enormous extent. They’re not making themselves rich in the process – but filthy rich.

Peers don’t receive a “second home allowance”, and they can only claim overnight subsistence for days they actually attended the Lords. If they want to employ a researcher or secretary, they have to do so out of their allowances or their own pockets. Even the exceptionally high claims you highlight are less than an MP’s salary, before even considering MPs’ expenses, particularly when pension contributions are considered. Elected Lords would only cost more, and people like Prescott would be at the top of their parties’ lists under a PR system so would still get seats automatically. At the same time, we’d lose all the crossbenchers and non-career-politicians who provide expertise to the House.
Incidentally, there has never been a Lord Prescott before, so that will suffice as his title.

Elected lords might cost more but I think people would be happier that they at least had some influence on the content of that house.
If they did make it fully PR and elected, presumably all of the Lords with actual knowledge and expertise as you put it would be expelled? Would this therefore make the House of Lords redundant?
