Excellent news today, and the first thing I can say is about bloody time. I wrote JDW an email a few weeks ago and they said they were keen to open in Blackpool but were unsure of where or when.
I spoke the other day about the mainstream reforms in relation to purchasing alcohol: the extra taxes on late night drinking promised by the Conservatives; the ability for local councils to blanket ban 24 hour drinking (can’t they do that already?) and the national banning of alcohol promotions.
Local mouthpiece Dave Daly is the much touted chairman of the licensees union Unite and runs the Castle pub on Central Drive, behind Coral Island.
Whenever there is a story about the possibility of a quality bar opening in Blackpool, a question about pub opening hours or announcement about drinks promotions you can be sure Dave Daly is going to be bleating to the Gazette about it. A pub might be too cheap for him, it might open too late for him. It might be too near his own pub.
My idea of binge drinking is going to a pub one or two days a week and drinking 8 or 9 alcoholic drinks. I don’t know what the Government’s idea of it is but today it’s rumoured that in the upcoming budget there will be a tax hike on beer, wine and other common alcoholic drinks.
