Simon Blackburn: Michael Foot is my hero

Blackpool Aloud has managed to coax an interview out of Blackpool Labour group leader Simon Blackburn who reflects on his previous life in a squalid junkie infested council estate in Edinburgh, his family’s unionist background and the policies that he hopes will revitalize the flattened Labour party and propel him into the council chamber hot-seat.

No Fowling! Blackpool streets officially clean

Despite reports claiming it’s one of the worst towns in the North West for grimy streets, Cllr Ian Fowler says Blackpool’s streets are “cleaner than ever”.

He attempts to blame a number of things for Blackpool’s poor showing in the crap streets league table, but of course doesn’t blame himself as the councillor responsible. First of all he disputes the figures as being old because they were from 2008/2009 and says that it’s much better now. Then he blames parked cars for a build up of detritus. Hmm. He then tries to spin that the streets are dirty due to the fact that Blackpool has increased footfall compared with most other towns. Explain why the streets are minging now then Ian. We’ve not had a tourist for 7 months.

Kensington could be kiboshed

According to the Gasjet’s outgoing Fylde reporter Joe Robinson, the housebuilding targets that have generated the housebuilding blight across Marton Moss, Queensway and the farmland around the end of the M55 are under review by the government. The green and pleasant land surrounding Blackpool and Fylde could actually be saved from execution by bulldozer.

I hinted that this may well be the case when I wrote that the Crystal Road project could have a hidden bonus for one councillor, but the homework has now been done by a Philtheone.com reader who has shared their findings with me.

In a desperate attempt to buy votes, it’s been revealed today that Labour forced through last minute spending in key marginals despite opposition from civil service mandarins.

One of the most recent cases that has come under scrutiny is the acquisition of Blackpool Tower and Winter Gardens from Leisure Parcs by Blackpool Council, a project to which £25m has been contributed through various Government channels (£15m from the North West Development Agency, £10m from Blackpool Council). There’s also a £10m plan to refurbish the Tower, but I’m not sure who’s paying for that: if it’s the NWDA then add another £10m to the government funding.
