It’s hard to imagine that Fleetwood, a once busy and thriving fishing port, actually had 2 railway stations and a direct rail link to London; hence the name of the North Euston Hotel.

Most residents of Blackpool will agree that the town has been lacking a comprehensive, integrated transport plan for decades. When the 14-platform Central Station closed in 1964, the throat of the tourism industry was slit and Blackpool’s lifeblood has been ebbing away ever since.

Blackpool’s ailing tram network has hit a setback as the Government stepped in to review the site for the proposed tram depot following complaints and court action from residents.
Originally proposed at Starr Gate, the £20million construction was hoped to be up and running early in 2011 but given the Government intervention this may not be the case.
Everyone who’s ever had to book a rail ticket knows that the array of prices, tickets and criteria with which you may use them can be a massive source of confusion and in many cases great annoyance.
Following the recent cold snap and resulting icy conditions, Blackpool Council have been under fire from irate locals due to perceived lack of gritting.
Once again a council representative has painted a glorious picture. Jez Evans, the manager of Streetscene (whatever that is) has claimed that the gritters were out non-stop. If they were, then there are clearly not enough gritters because hardly anyone saw one and many major roads were left icy resulting in plenty of accidents.
July-September
“I love this town.” - Phil “The Power” Taylor
The start of July saw Blackpool’s Opera House announced as the 2009 venue for the Royal Variety Performance. The show would be in December. We also saw Labour crushed in the European elections as the British National Party secured two seats in the European Parliament. Their victory rally would be held in Blackpool a few weeks later prompting an invasion of Unite Against Fascism.
It’s that time of year once again where we all go and spend more than we’ve got, drink more than we should and forget about the trials of our everyday working lives. A bit like what this Labour government has been doing for the last 12 years.
Nice to see the gritters haven’t been out and roads such as Hawes Side Lane, Ansdell Road, Whitegate Drive, Church Street, Central Drive, Albert Road and Dickson Road were and in some cases still are slushy, icy and dangerous. No wonder there were so many emergency services vehicles about.
